Why It’s so Important to Change Your Locks When Moving into a New Place

You’ve found the house of your dreams and you will soon be making the move into your new place. You’re excited but there are still so many things to do! You have the mover lined up, many of the boxes are packed but you still need to submit a change of address to the post office and phone the utility companies to get things hooked up at your new home. You’ll also need to make sure that a lock change is also on your list. In fact, it should be considered as a priority on your list and here’s why.

While you may have purchased this home from a lovely older couple that seem trustworthy enough, you don’t know who else has a copy of the house key. Quite often, keys can be given out at a moment’s notice to a dog walker, a handyman, a contractor, a home sitter, a distant cousin that’s just visiting for a weekend etc. In fact, you really won’t have a clue who has access to your home if you don’t get your locks changed right away.

It’s a good idea to call up and make an appointment with a locksmith and have them show up on moving day to change the locks. It really isn’t a difficult process nor is it very time-consuming. Even though moving day is going to be quite hectic, you’ll still want to get the locks changed as soon as possible. You’ll sleep better at night knowing you did.

A locksmith can also let you know whether the locks offer enough security for the home you’re moving into. In some cases, the locks can be 20 or 30 years old and may even be lacking a deadbolt. The locksmith will be able to examine the current lock system of the home and may recommend an upgrade for better protection.
