Key bumping uses a specially cut "bump key" to open a pin tumbler lock without the original key. When the key is inserted and struck sharply — typically with a small mallet or the heel of a hand — the impact causes the pins inside the cylinder to jump momentarily. If timed correctly, this brief moment of separation allows the plug to rotate and the lock to open.

Studies have shown that a large proportion of standard residential locks can be bumped open in seconds, often leaving no visible signs of forced entry. These locks are also typically pick-resistant and drill-resistant, providing a comprehensive upgrade over standard hardware.

A secondary layer of protection is a deadbolt with a longer throw bolt. While this does not prevent bumping on its own, it makes forced entry more difficult overall and slows down an intruder. Pairing a high-security deadbolt with reinforced strike plates and door frames addresses multiple attack vectors at once.
